Dear Reader,
What you’ve read thus far are samples of The Dragon Doc Tales. As many of you know, the Tales contain many elements of real-life experiences.
For instance, I truly developed High Altitude Cerebral Edema while hiking Humphrey’s Peak in Arizona, and I actually saw a dragon. I wish I could say that she was more than a hallucination. She was a stunningly beautiful creature.
My husband and I had attempted to climb Humphrey’s two weeks prior, and just as we reached timberline, we were forced to rapidly descend due to fierce and fast-moving thunderstorms. In between that day and the later (and even more disastrous) hike, I read the entire Chronicles of Narnia. If you’re familiar with C.S. Lewis’s works, you’ll recall that dragons appear in the later books; they are not featured as major characters, but dragons are woven into the stories. I’m convinced that the dragon I saw on Humphrey’s Peak was firmly Narnian-induced.
Also, anyone who heard me poking fun at my own misadventures last year will recognize the dragon’s skunky breath weapon in Dragon Toes and Horrible Odors. My intent was to catch a certain cat with a live trap (long story), but instead I caught a skunk. This was in no way the skunk’s fault, and I wished him no harm, so after watching several YouTube videos created by others in similar predicaments, I formulated a plan to safely release said skunk without getting sprayed. What could possibly go wrong?
Well as it turns out, everything. Now when I recommend skunk odor removal formulas and products for my patients, I can do so with the familiarity that only very personal experience will provide.

I like the spirit you depict when it comes to communicating with the dragons and are able to figure out how to treat them seeing the size difference of anything you probably learned in school and have worked on prior. I also love the artwork. Keep up the good work, both of you 🙂

I always get a kick out of your sense of humor, ability to weave real-life connections/experiences into the story, and of course your observations of the dragons' physical and mental status, as I'm sure you do w/every animal you treat in your practice. As you probably know, I have never read the Chronicles of Narnia or even Harry Potter for that matter (not a big fan of 'magical/fantasy'in general) but am loving how you approach it. Maybe it helps that I know you, but I think this story would be a hit with many folks who do not, but can appreciate a good yarn that both stretches the imagination and keeps the events grounded in reality.
