URBAN DRAGONS

Dragon Doc

Hello! Not long ago, I requested photos of Urban Dragons in their Natural Habitats. And readers, you delivered! I’ve been thrilled to see the motley crew of dragons landing in my inbox.

What are “urban dragons,” you may ask? Urban dragons include any dragon, of any species, depicted in our environment; whether as a drawing, painting, or sculpture, or in iron works, pottery, food, dishes, you name it. Accidental dragons, such as cloud dragons, count too!

Once you start looking, dragons are everywhere! I am fascinated by the extent dragons are interwoven into our culture, art, and design. These days, friends and family often send me photos of urban dragons they find on their outings, so I get to see even more dragons. Cool!

READERS’ PHOTO SUBMISSIONS

First, submitted by Natalie D: this is a local theatre production, and by all accounts, it is a great performance! I’m told the dragon is quite talented.

Next, Book Dragon’s collection of Urban Dragons: I can’t say I’ve ever encountered a rubber dragon ducky, but Book Dragon found one! On the bottom is Book Dragon’s shih tzu, whose tail tip makes him look like he sprouted a dragon tongue. Cute!

Lastly for now, submitted by Dave: over a decade, a gentleman in East Rudham, UK (not Dave) with lots of time on his hands transformed this one hundred-foot long hedge into a spectacular dragon! Photo from BBC News.

LOCAL URBAN DRAGONS

In the meantime, while exploring Idaho Falls, I discovered a few more Urban Dragons myself. These murals adorn Pugsslane Alley, dedicated to empowering street artists to display their talents in a way that is safe, legal, and free. Many of the murals highlight mental health and wellness, which is wonderful to see! Learn more about Pugsslane Alley on Instagram.

I spied the yin & yang dragon incense holder at Shaddow Domain, Idaho Falls’s premier oddities shop. If you love all things creepy, cool, and curious and have the opportunity, be sure to visit Shaddow Domain. While you’re there, check out the museum in the back! Until then, learn more about ShaddowDomain on Instagram.

Have you spied any urban dragons? Please share them! I’d love to see your photos.

Sincerely,
