Dragon Treasure Hoard

Dragon Doc

Excerpt from “Puppy Dog Dragon,” Chapter 11 of The Dragon Doc Tales:

As I rubbed and scratched the leathery scales over his head and neck, he sniffed and nibbled at my necklace and earrings, abruptly abandoning those to nibble at my rings whenever my hands left his head….

This guy would undoubtedly collect shiny things and build a “treasure” hoard, I thought. Of course the fantasy trope is that dragons hoard treasure and guard it fiercely. In reality, I’ve learned that only a small minority of dragons are interested in “treasure.” And not everything they collect has value to humans; while it’s true they will acquire coins, precious metals, and gemstones, they also collect things like junk metal, glass bottles, and pretty but “worthless” rocks and the like, sometimes even glittery plastic things. The contents of a dragon’s hoard might be described as one part packrat, one part goblin, and one part toddler after visiting the dollar store.
